Life with Helen Keller
- Annie Sullivan became a very successful graduate, but she needed money
- Being the valedictorian of her class, her director asked her to move to Alabama to teach a deaf-blind girl called Helen Keller, after receiving a note from the young girls father
- Annie was thrilled, because the job payed her 25 dollars a month which was just right for her
- She prepared, and studied very hard for a few months
- When Annie was ready, she headed for Alabama
- When Annie arrived, she learned that Helen was very undisciplined
- With permission from the Keller parents, Sullivan moved her and Helen to a cottage on the Keller farm
- At the cottage, Annie Sullivan first began teaching discipline
- Helen Keller began realizing that she had to obey
- One day, when Annie and Helen were at the water pump, Annie had Helen put a mug under the rushing water, and then spelled w-a-t-e-r into her other hand
- This was the moment when Annie Sullivan thought of a great idea
- Everything the two girls did, or held, Annie finger spelled the word into Helen's hand
- Helen Keller started to understand that everything had a name
- To speak, Helen Keller would put her hand over Annie's mouth, throat and lips and feel the movements her mouth should make
